The Magic Kingdom

The magic kingdom. Every day the young one would wake up in the magic kingdom. The young one would go to the kitchen and open the fridge. There were always things to eat.

The fridge was always stocked, even when the milk was almost gone or the bread was almost finished, the next day the young one would go to the fridge and the fridge would be replenished.Magic Kindom

The magic kingdom was a wonderful and amazing place although the young one didn’t know it. For the young one, this was just the way life was. Whatever the young one wanted it would magically be there the next day. If the young one wanted to use the internet, it was there ready to use. If the young one wanted to have a shower, the soap and the shampoo were there, ready to use. The young one never had to think about having clean clothes because in the magic kingdom there was always clean clothes.

One day the King summoned the young one.

“Let’s take a walk” He said.

As they walked he asked the young one

“Are you ready to look after yourself?”

The young one looked puzzled.

The King continued “Do you know how the fridge in the magic kingdom gets replenished?”

The young one replied “Yes, you buy things when we need them.”

He felt proud to answer this simple question.

The king said, “Do you know how the clothes become clean? How the food is made ready for you to eat?  How the…?”

“Yes” the young one interrupted, “Someone does all those things.”

The King replied, “But are you ready to leave the magic kingdom and look after yourself? Are you ready to go to college? Are you ready to stand on your own?”

The young one thought for a moment and said, “Yes, I am”.

The king smiled and he began his lecture.

“Do you know what it is like to get ready to go to bed, you are feeling tired and just want to go to sleep and you find out that there is not enough milk in the fridge for tomorrow? Do you know what it is like to have to run to the store late at night because someone used all the toilet paper? Are you ready to manage that? Do you know that we pay the internet bill every month and just as we have paid the last month’s bill it seems as though the next month’s bill is there?”

The young one realized that the magic kingdom didn’t really run on magic. The young one knew that there were a lot more to think about and prepare for.

The King said, “Enjoy this time in your life and be grateful for all of the things you get for free. Once you leave the magic kingdom you will be in charge of your life and everything in it. The lessons I teach you are to make your life outside the magic kingdom as easy as possible. But you need to take charge of your life and know what you want your life to be. This is my advice to you. Believe in yourself and your abilities. Listen to your feelings. Do things that you would be proud to tell others. Never be afraid to ask for help. And when you are living on your own and you are managing your bills and your groceries make sure you do this one thing. This one very important thing. This thing is above all other things. This is the most important thing. Never, ever, no matter what, never, ever run out of toilet paper!!!”
