It is that wonderful time of year again. The time of year where we get to relax in front of the T.V and watch one of the most exciting sports, the NFL.
But there is a lot more to the sport than just competition and entertainment. In Chapter 7 of our book “Your Invincible Power” I wrote about how the NFL influenced me and made me a great manager.
Chapter 7 entitled – How does a sports team go from worst to first, I wrote,
I guess the first thing they need to do is to recognize that they suck! They need to do an assessment of what is working and what is not. They need to see why they are not able to compete at the level they expected to. Once this is done they need to figure out where they want to go.
For me watching the NFL was like going to business school or taking a course but at this course I could drink beer all day while I learned how to manage a business.
You get a first-hand look at how multimillion dollar businesses function. What other businesses are open with their day to day activities and decisions? The NFL not only gives you access to 32 different companies they even have those companies justify each big decision every week.
You also get access to 32 different management styles to learn from. You can study and understand each one and see which ones make decision that bring success and which ones make decisions that harm the team.
In Chapter 7, I wrote, I remember when I was running production I would watch NFL football.
I would study how Belichick would handle injuries, how Dungy would handle a loss, how Cower would manage a close game. When people would ask me who my favorite team was I would tell them that I follow the coaches as much as I follow the teams.
This was an awesome way to learn how to deal with different people and build a winning team for my production floor and all the while I could enjoy glassfuls of beer while I studied. The NFL is a great tool to use if you are building a business. There are so many lessons that can be learned each week from watching it with new eyes.
The NFL is one of the most exciting sports to watch because each team is managing 52 players and each player has individual goals.
The teams can only become teams if they learn how to get everyone working toward the team goal. This inspired Chapter 7 and gives a lot of insight into how to grow in your personal life and in your business.
I hope you take time to watch the NFL this season and learn the lessons that are hidden within the game. And I hope you enjoy some cold beers while you study.
